Best Teeth Whitening Products - 3 Excellent Tips To Whiter Teeth

By Debbie Ruffo

Choosing the best teeth whitening products is not so easy these days given the multitude of choices available to consumers. There are strips, gels, rinsing solutions, toothpastes, trays, pens and many other newfangled methods that are still being tested. There's a huge market for it, with more than 100 million Americans spending in excess of $15 billion every year hoping to be able to flash a million-dollar smile.

Medical technology and dental procedures are now so far advanced that dentists can honestly promise to provide a perfect set of pristine white teeth to anyone who wants it. Most of the time, they use chemical and bleaching solutions applied with the help of heat and/or light. Using lasers makes the procedure just that much faster and more precise.

There's a difference between whitening and bleaching. The former restores the natural color hidden behind years of decay, discolorations and stains. Bleaching, on the other hand, makes teeth even whiter than the natural unblemished color that shows up when teeth are whitened.

Some procedures call for the expertise of dentists and their arsenal of high-tech equipment. Several products require multiple sessions with a dentist, while others may need just a single quick session. Simple do-it-yourself kits may be purchased across the counter and applied at home. Some of these must be used regularly at home over a period of several weeks.

The problem is deciding which one is required, and then making sure it is done in the right way, with or without a professional's help. Those in doubt should ask their dentist to do an examination to find out what sort of product will do the trick. In-office bleaching is usually what dentists suggest, where they apply the product in one or more sessions using heat, light and/or lasers.

On the other hand, a DIY kit bought over the counter is far cheaper than a session or two with a dentist. Those who believe they can choose the right product and properly use the handling trays and strips or gels will end up saving a lot of money. However, the whole thing has to be done by the book, which in this case means the manual or instruction booklet that is provided with the kit.

One common issue is a whitening tray that may not match the mouth of a patient. When this happens, the gel leaks out and the entire effort may be wasted. It can even cause irritation in the gums. For this and other such reasons, it's important to choose the right product that can be customized to match each patient's unique jaw structure and the size and shape of the teeth.

It's just as critical that the provider and brand be 100% reliable. Consumers can't depend on the FDA here because this is not a drug. One way to pick out a reliable brand is to look for the ADA (the American Dental Association) seal of acceptance. It's not mandatory, but all the best teeth whitening products have this seal.
