Infertility No Longer Means That A Couple Cannot Have A Child

By Diana Saunders

Most couples have a strong desire to build a family but it is an unfortunate fact that many thousands of couple are unable to conceive. This can cause acute unhappiness and some relationships have floundered because of the inability to have a baby. Luckily the field of infertility has been the subject of many scientific studies and great strides have been made to help couples to have a baby.

The inability to conceive can have its roots in many places. Smoking, drinking, an inactive life and diet can play an important role. Many diseases also cause either men or women to become infertile. Men may have very low sperm counts. This may be naturally low or it can be caused by medication or various cancer treatments such as chemotherapy. Women may have problems with their fallopian tubes.

When a couple wants to conceive but find it impossible, they should examine their lifestyles and the various risk factors before seeking medical help. Obese and unfit women often find it very difficult to conceive. Diet also plays a very important role. Many couples find that they become able to conceive after making relatively simple changes in their lifestyles such as exercising regularly, dealing with stress and stopping habits such as smoking.

When medical intervention is sought, both partners will have to become part of the process. Treatment can only be given once the underlying cause of the inability to conceive is identified. The problem can lie with either partner, or even with both of them. That is why numerous tests are run and very thorough physical examinations are conducted before there can be any question of fertility treatment.

There are many ways in which to increase fertility. In the case of men the underlying cause is often impotence or premature ejaculation. Behavioral therapy and various medicines can often solve these problems. Men may also have too few sperm. In some cases the sperm can be removed surgically or blockages preventing the sperm from reaching the semen can be corrected with simple surgery.

Much can also be done to increase the fertility of women. There are several medicines available that are used to ensure a healthy ovulation cycle. Problems with ovulation can have several causes and in some cases more than one drug is prescribed. Many women fail to conceive because they have too many male hormones. This can also be treated with drugs. Patience is required because treatment may have to continue for several months.

It is important to keep in mind that there are some risks involved. One of the biggest risks is the development of multiple fetuses. In such cases premature birth is a real danger to the health of both the mother and the babies. There may also be negative reactions to the medication. If the treatment fails, many women develop depression and other behavioral problems.

The desire for a child can be an extremely strong emotion. Many couples will go to almost any length to be able to conceive. While medical science have made great advances in this field there are still no guarantees. There are other options, however. Many couples adopt and grow to love the child as if it is their own.
