Some Basics On Breast Enlargement Surgery

By Marissa Velazquez

Breast enlargement is a very common procedure these days. While there exists significant controversy related to the ethical aspects, the popularity continues by the day. The procedure itself is fairly simple. It involves the addition of synthetic tissue or fat tissue to a breast in an attempt to enhance its appearance. Many women choose to have it when they notice that they have some form of asymmetry between the two glands. It is interesting to note that asymmetry is very common and does not whatsoever suggest any deformity.

The augmentation procedure also known as mammoplasty is known to have a number of risks that you need to be aware of if you intend to have it at some point in time. There have been some suggestions that mammoplasty predisposes to cancer. The evidence is still scanty but studies to confirm or refute these claims are ongoing. While the procedure may not lead to cancer directly, there is a high likelihood that malignancies that may arise later may be a diagnostic challenge because of the increase in tissue density.

The mammary glands function just like any other glands; they produce substances known as hormones. These hormones have very important functions as regards the reproductive lifestyle of women. They maintain both the menstrual cycles and pregnancies whenever one conceives. Having surgery may have a negative impact on these physiological systems. It is important to have all these considerations in mind even as you make the decision.

Two types of implants are used. The choice of implant is largely depended on patient preference. Among the factors to consider are the residual scar and the consistency of tissues. The types that exist include elastic gel implants and saline gel implants. In both types, there is an outer shell made of silicon. The gel type is preferred for its good consistency that is almost natural. Its main disadvantage is that it requires a large incision. The saline type is malleable but the consistency is not as good.

Mammoplasty is a major operation that has to be done under general anaesthesia. The surgeon makes an incision on the lower part of the breast slightly above the crease. The lower part of the areola is an alternative route that is sometimes used. It is through this incision that a pocket for the implant is made. One the implant has been fitted the opening is stitched.

It takes a few weeks for recovery to take place following the surgery. During the recovery period, you will be required to avoid strenuous physical activities as much as possible. At the same time, you need to handle the operated site with caution to avoid causing injury and to allow for proper healing. The results will be very impressive if the surgery is carried out meticulously.

The results are widely variable among patients. Although a good number of people are satisfied, a significant number of them may have a few misgivings. On rare occasions, some people have to be taken in for a second operation due to unsatisfactory results. Gravity and patient age have a significant effect on the final outcome.

An important component of breast enlargement that must be mentioned is self-esteem. Having confidence in your appearance and maintaining a positive outlook will help you make more objective decisions. In fact you will realize that all you need to change is your outlook of things rather than the appearance of your body.
